A Summer Weekend in Telluride
Colorado is full of adorable old mining mountain towns – and Telluride is definitely a favorite. Each year we take a weekend trip to a Colorado mountain town. We’ve fallen in love with the charm and unique vibes of them. In August of 2019 we chose Telluride and fell in love with the fresh mountain air, incredible wildflower hikes, free gondola rides, and the cutest historic downtown built into the mountain valley. Here are our top recommendations:
Where to stay:
The Mountain Village (we booked through VRBO) – it is so beautiful we felt like we were inside a real life painting. It is also significantly cheaper to stay here during the summer (vs. winter ski season) and there is a free gondola ride to town. The gondola from the peak to the downtown area is an experience worth doing on itโs own. Plus, you save on the hassle and cost of trying to find somewhere to park.
When to Visit:
We recommend trying to go around peak wildflower season (Mid-July usually) – this can vary year-by-year so be sure to look it up to find specific weeks for the Summer you’re aiming for. I’m sure it’s beautiful year round, (winter included) if you get a chance to ski there!
Recommendations/What to do:
- We did the Hope Lake Trail hike, which is a moderate 4mi round trip out-and-back hike that was abundant with wildflowers and ends at a spectacular lake
- Take the Free Gondola into town. It is one of the only free forms of public transportation in the U.S. The views are spectacular.
- Shop and explore the downtown area. We ate at the cutest bakery called Butcher and the Baker.
- Sunset Picnic on top of the mountain – near San Sophiaโs lookout. On our first night we rode up the gondola to catch sunset and have a picnic on top of the mountain
- 4 Wheeling – One thing we did not do, but was on our list if we had more time.
